作賓語補(bǔ)足語的不定式tobe

　　The whole country was very sad at the news of his death； the people had considered him to be a great leader， and a wise， kind and honest man.

　　句中“ to be a great leader， and a wise， kind and honest man ”是“ had considered ”的賓語補(bǔ)足語，用來說明賓語 him 的身份和性格特征。 consider 是表示心理狀態(tài)和感覺的動(dòng)詞。依照慣用法，它后面可以用“ to be + 名詞、形容詞或介詞短語”作賓語補(bǔ)足語。 believe， declare， find， imagine， judge， prove， report， think 和 deny， discover， feel， guess， know， suppose， understand 等也都屬于這類動(dòng)詞。  這些動(dòng)詞的這一用法常用于正式文體。例如：

　　They all believe the story to be true.

　　他們都相信這篇報(bào)道是真實(shí)的。

　　He declared the story to be false.

　　他斷言這篇報(bào)道是假的。

　　Imagine yourself to be in his place.

　　設(shè)想你自己處于他的地位，那又會(huì)怎么樣呢？

　　We judged the distance to be about four miles.

　　我們估計(jì)距離大約是 4 英里遠(yuǎn)。

　　We all felt the plan to be unwise.

　　我們都感到這個(gè)計(jì)劃是不明智的。

　　Fans know him to be a good player.

　　球迷們都知道他是個(gè)好球員。

　　Everyone reported him to be the best man for the job.

　　人人都在傳說他最適合做這項(xiàng)工作。

　　I understood him to be a distant relation.

　　我猜想他是個(gè)遠(yuǎn)房親戚。  在被動(dòng)句中， to be 短語應(yīng)為句子主語的補(bǔ)足語。例如：

　　Money was also thought to be very important. （ SB I ， L.42 ）

　　錢也被認(rèn)為是很重要的。

　　The speaker’s supposed to be excellent. （ SB II ， L. 89 ）

　　這位演講人被認(rèn)為是很優(yōu)秀的。  作 believe， consider， declare， find， imagine， judge， prove， report 和 think 等及物動(dòng)詞的賓語補(bǔ)足語或主語補(bǔ)足語的 to be 可以省略。例如：

　　I found him （ to be ） much younger than I had expected.

　　我發(fā)覺他比我原先預(yù)料的要年輕得多。

　　I thought him （ to be ） too old for the work.

　　我認(rèn)為他太老了，不適合做那項(xiàng)工作。

　　Her work is considered （ to be ） the best here. （ SB I ， L. 75 ）

　　在工作方面她在這兒被認(rèn)為是最好的一個(gè)。

　　He was proved （ to be ） wrong.

　　他被證實(shí)是錯(cuò)的。

　　但 to be 是完成形式時(shí)，卻不能省略。例如：

　　We believed it to have been a mistake.

　　我們相信那曾是個(gè)錯(cuò)誤。  在非正式文體中，這些及物動(dòng)詞后面的復(fù)合賓語可由 that 引導(dǎo)的賓語從句取代。例如：

　　I guessed him to be a doctor by the way he spoke. = I guessed that he was a doctor by the way he spoke.

　　我從他講話的方式猜想，他是個(gè)醫(yī)生。

　　She denied herself to have been there. = She denied that she had been there.

　　她否認(rèn)自己曾經(jīng)去過那里。

　　The film is believed to be the best this year. = It is believed that the film is the best this year.

　　這部電影被認(rèn)為是今年最好的。

　　The man was later discovered to have been a spy. = It was later discovered that the man had been a spy.

　　后來，發(fā)現(xiàn)這個(gè)人當(dāng)過間諜。
