In 1897, H GWells wrote a science fiction book about spaceships coming to Earth. Its namewas The War of the Worlds. The book was still very popular in the 1930s. On 30October, 1938, a man named Orson Welles put out a radio programme from the book. The programme was different from the book in one important way: in theprogramme the actors talked like reporters and it sounded like a news report tothe listeners.
The actors said, “Space people from theplanet Mars are going to attack Earth. Huge things like snakes will come out ofspaceships and kill people and people’s guns cannot hurt any of them.” Whenpeople heard this, they were very afraid. Some even left their homes and triedto hide.

Throughout thehistory of mankind, people have communicated with body language. Although youprobably don’t realize you are doing it, you use your hands and the rest ofyour body every time you talk to someone. In many situations, what you say withyour eyes is more important than what comes out of your mouth. Eye contact isone of the most important forms of body language. It can be the key tosuccessful communication. It can show whether a person is friendly orunfriendly, interested or bored, clear or confused. However, eye contact canmean different things in different cultures. In Western cultures, making eyecontact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a Westerner mightconsider a lack of eye contact as a lack of interest.

Animals showtheir feelings with their faces and bodies—if they show their teeth and raisetheir backs, that means they’re angry. Humans do many of these things, too. Youcan usually tell whether someone is happy or angry, relaxed or nervous, proudor ashamed, just by looking at them. Words are not always necessary. We onlyhave to observe our pets to see how close animal and human body languages are. When a cat is feeling confident, it will stand very tall and point its noseinto the air. Humans do the same thing when they are feeling proud. They lifttheir heads and push out their chins. Chimpanzees are very similar to humans. For example, children often put their hands together and point their palms upwhen they want something. Chimpanzees use the same gesture to beg for food fromother members of their group.
