Section A Short Conversation
1.It seems to me that there is no need to have a screen on the door in the winter
We usually put it on in summer, don't we?
The only reason for having a screen on the door is
to keep insects out while the door is open.
Q: When does the screen prevent insects from entering the room?
2. M:You know,I'm leaving for Paris tomorrow but I don't know any French.
How will I manage if I have to find a toilet, for example?
W: It's easy.
There are drawings that make everything very clear.
You'll see a little picture of a man over the men's room
and one of a woman over the ladies' room.
Q:According to the woman, how can the man find a toilet in Paris?
3. M:I'm going to Italy next month.
Because of my poor Italian,I'm afraid I can't make myself understood.
What can I do?
W: You'd better speak slowly
and you may make a gesture when you cannot express your meaning clearly.
But why not ask an interpreter to go along with you?
Q: What's the man's problem?
4. M:Godness,I'm tired.
It's time for a coffee break.
Let's go out for some coffee, O.K.?
W: I'm trying to save money nowadays.
Why don't you sit down and relax right here at my home
and I'll make you a cup of coffee.
Q: What's the woman's suggestion?
5. M: Excuse me,Lisa.
I noticed a copy of encyclopedia on your desk.
Would you mind if I borrowed it this afternoon?
W: Certainly,Jones.
I'm not reading it right now
so why don't you take it home over the weekend.
Just remember to return it on Monday.
Q: What's the woman's attitude to the man?
6.W:Don't worry about it,Stanley.
There's nothing we can do now.
M: I guess you're right.
Next time I buy tickets for the theater,
I'll be sure to look at the date.
Then we'll go on the right day instead of a day late.
Q: What do we learn from the conversation?
7.M:It seems to me you have everything you'll need,Mrs.Jones.
Our ship is about to leave, let's go. W:No,I don't.
Something is missing, but I can't think what it could be.
My passport,my boat tickets my suitcases...yes,they're all here.
Oh! Now I know what it is! Where is my husband?
Q: What did the woman forget?
8.M:Elizabeth,
would you please read this letter of application I've just written.
I'd like to have your opinion.
W: I'd be glad to tell you what I think.
You should write about your education first
then you should give much more information about your work experience.
The last paragraph should be left out.
Q: What did the woman think of the last paragraph?
9. M: Excuse me.I've never used a library like this before.
I wonder if someone might have time to show me around.
W:I'd be very glad to show you around but I'm very busy right now.
Could you come back about 3:30?
Q: Which of the following statements is true?
10. M:Yes,I'd like to have these prescriptions filled, please.
W: Certainly,if you'll just wait a few minutes I'll have them for you.
Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?
Section B Passage One
Darwin was a great scientis
He studied living things in the world.
He said,"There are thoudands of living things.
But in the past, the number was smaller.
In the far past, a still smaller number.
In the beginning---perhaps only one."
Darwin waited a long time before he put these things into a book.
He always tried to add more and more facts
he wanted his ideas about evolution to be right.
It took him many years to write the book.
On the first day, people bought every copy.
the men of the churches fought against Darwin's ideas.
His story of the world was different from theirs.
So either Darwin or the men of the churches must be wrong.
But the churches did not bring any new facts,or better ideas.
They only brought angry words.
Later,Darwin wrote a book about the evolution of man.
He said that man is also a kind of animal.
And again,Darwin did not just write down his own ideas.
He filled his book with facts.
We know now that he was right.
There have been men for more than a million years.
We have found some of their bones.
Bones have told us a lot about the evolution of living things.
Like any other animals, man slowly changed through time.
But we cannot find the bones of man from a few million years ago.
There were not any men at that time.
The world's animals were different then.
But the bones can take us backwards through time--into the past.
And they can help us with our study of the evolution of life.
11. What were Darwin's ideas based on?
12. Why did the men of the churches fight against Darwin's ideas?
13. According to the passage, which of the following is not true?
Passage Two
As is known to all scientists and philosophers
had studied the human body and its functions from very early times.
Unfortunately, many of the ideas and theorie correct and incorrect
were accepted without question for a great number of years.
But by the 16th century
knowledge gained through chemical experiment
was beginning to make some people think more deeply about how the human body works.
A most important medical discovery was made by William Harvey in 1628.
He found out that the blood is circulated round the body
in one direction only by the pumping action of the heart
It had previously been incorrectly thought that
the blood moved with a backward and forward motion.
Early in the 17th century a new instrument came into use
that was to open up a whole new area in the study of medical and sicentific matter
this was the microscope.
The first instruments were not very efficient.
They were able to magnify only a very small part of the object
and this was always surrounded by rings of coloured light.
Nevertheless a great step forward had been taken
which was of vital importance for future research and development.
14. What was the unfortunate thing mentioned in the passage?
15. What did William Harvey find out in 1628?
16.What instrument gave a great help to the study of medical and scientific matters?
Passage Three
One way that scientists learn about man is by animals
such as mice, rats and monkeys
the scientists in this laboratory are experimenting on mice
they are studying the relationship between diet and health.
At this time over one hundred experiments are going on in this laboratory.
In this experiment, the scientists are studying the relationship
between the amount of food the mice eat and their health.
The mice are in three groups.
All three groups are receiving the same healthy died
But the amount of food that each group is receiving is different
The first group is eating one cup of food each day,
the second is eating two cup and the third group of mice is eating three cups.
After three years,
the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day.
The mice in this group are thinner than normal mice.
But they are more active.
Also they are living longer.
Mice usually live for two years.
Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.
The second group of of mice is normal weight.
They are healthy,too.
They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice.
But they are only living about two years.
The last group of mice spends most of the days eating or sleeping.
They are not very active.
These mice are living longer than the scientists thought
about a year and a half.
But they are not healthy.
The experiment is still going on.
The scientists hope to finish their studies in two years.
17. According to the passage,
what animals are often used by scientists to learn about man?
18.What are the scientists studying in this laboratory?
