Changes in Chinese People’s Diet
From 1999 to 2003, great changes had taken place in Chinese people’s diet. As is revealed in the table, during the five years, the consumption of grain decreased by 9%, while that of meat and milk increased by 6% and 4% respectively. From the figures we can draw the conclusion that grain, as the staple food in China, is playing a less important role in people’s diet, while the consumption of high-energy food, such as meat and milk, has increased steadily.
What has caused these changes? From my point of view, there are two main reasons. On the one hand, people now have more money to buy high-energy food. On the other hand, people now pay more attention to the quality of their diet. They are seeking for the most reasonable diet structure that will do good to their health.
As a result, we can see that people’s living standard has greatly improved in the five years. We can also expect better living standard and more reasonable diet structure in the future.
